There are better ways to plan for the weather than your device’s generic weather app. Learn how to find the weather answers you’re really looking for in this talk. You’ll even learn how to make a short term forecast yourself, without even using the internet.
Joe Martucci has been the meteorologist for The Press of Atlantic City since 2017, covering the Jersey Shore and South Jersey. Transforming weather in media, Joe is the only meteorologist at a newspaper in New Jersey. Joe produces twice daily video forecasts using state of the art equipment, a daily written weather column, the national Across the Sky weather podcast and more. Joe was born, raised and has only worked in the Garden State.
Joe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Rutgers University. Joe is a 10x New Jersey Press Association Award winner and has been featured nationally in The New Yorker and the Deadliest Catch. He earned the American Meteorological Society’s first Certified
Digital Meteorologist Seal in 2023, adding to his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist Seal. Both, awarded by America’s biggest professional weather organization, are given to those with exceptional knowledge and communication of weather to the public.
Landscape Design Sessions
Session 1: “Landscape Design with Pollinators & Birds in Mind”
Speaker: Pat Sutton, a local expert, educator and author on pollinator gardens, insects, butterflies and birds.
Date: June 14, 2024 @ 2:30 pm (2 hrs)
Location: 250 39th Street Tennis Building, Avalon N.J.
About
The program will be split into two parts. The first half of the workshop will cover resources and a slide program about the topic. The second half of the workshop the group will brainstorm the projected images of each participant’s rough sketch. This brainstorming session should result in participants heading home with ideas and plans to enhance each of their properties for pollinators and birds.
Registration
Registration is required. Avalon property owners may register beginning May 17. All others may register beginning May 31. To register, please call the library at 609-967-7155 or stop by the circulation desk. Space is limited. At registration, participants will receive Pat Sutton’s handout, “Landscape Design with Pollinators and Birds in Mind,” which includes instructions on creating a sketch of your property required for the class. Prior to the June 14th workshop, please create a sketch of your property, clearly mark your name in large, bold letters on the sketch, photograph the sketch, and e-mail the jpg or pdf scan to Pat Sutton (Pat’s e-mail is at the top of Landscape Design HANDOUT). In the e-mail subject line please enter: “Landscape Design – June 14 – your full name.”
Wetlands Institute
Speaker: Erin Rawls, outreach co-cordinator for The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, N.J. She will hold three lectures during June through September about different species native to southern New Jersey!
Lecture 1: Horseshoe Crabs- Living Fossils at the beach
Date: June 20th, 2024 @ 6 p.m.
Location: Surfside Park (Avalon Community Center if inclement weather occurs)

Every spring at the shore our beaches get visited by a living fossil- the Horseshoe Crab! At this presentation, we’ll meet and learn all about the Horseshoe Crab, discuss why so many animals rely on them to survive (including humans) and the research and conservation efforts here at The Wetlands Institute.
