Avalon’s new Surfside Park is substantially completed with facilities to be open for Memorial Day weekend, 2019.  The project is nearing overall completion with finishing touches on the park being completed in early June.  The Park has been constructed by Fred M. Schiavone Construction and supported by a $2 million grant from the Cape May County Open Space program.  Project management has been provided by Mott MacDonald Engineers and by the Taylor Design Group.

The only significant feature of the Park that will not be usable for Memorial Day weekend is the grassy play area in the center of the facility.  New sod was placed on Tuesday, May 21st and it takes about two weeks for the sod to settle and firm up.  Avalon is asking individuals to refrain from entering the grassy field until it is open to the public.  There may be temporary seams between the sod which makes the field not fit for play until sometime in the first week of June.

The new playground equipment is available for use this weekend, including the slide that children can use to slide off the boardwalk into the playground area.  There are new bathrooms located adjacent to the boardwalk with additional stalls and sinks, along with rinsing stations.  A changing room adjacent to the parking lot is available for day trippers to change into, and out of, swimsuits following a day on the beach.  A new gazebo has been erected to take a break from the sun, or for a picnic.  The Park includes beautiful new landscaping, and shade sails over the playground equipment to keep it cool during the hot summer sun.  There are Avalon lifeboats installed with easy access for picture-taking opportunities.  New bicycle racks are also in place.

Still to come immediately after Memorial Day weekend will be the installation of new decorative and functional light posts, along with two entrance signs to the Park.

Surfside Park is located adjacent to the Avalon Boardwalk, Avalon Community Hall, and the Beach Tag Booth at 30th Street and the beach.  There are 900 free parking spaces in large parking lots adjacent to the Park, boardwalk, and beach.  Keep a lookout for details about a grand opening celebration with live music and family activities planned for Saturday, June 22nd with some very special guests who will be very familiar to our friends and neighbors who live in the Delaware Valley…and follow sports!
