The Borough of Avalon will conduct a maintenance dredging project in Pennsylvania Harbor that will clear the public navigation channel in advance of the spring and summer boating seasons. Council awarded a contract on Wednesday, February 13th to Trident Piling Company, LLC that will result in largely sandy material being removed from the channel and being deposited at a location with an Acceptable Use Determination from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
A pre-construction meeting with Trident Piling Company, LLC was held on Tuesday, February 26th. This project is anticipated to take five to seven days to complete. The contractor plans to mobilize on March 25th and begin dredging on or about March 27th.
“As soon as we learned from boaters that the sandy material washed in to the channel we began a survey of the conditions and began the process of obtaining necessary federal and state approvals”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “We had a very competitive bidding process and as a result saved tens of thousands of dollars on this dredging project”.
The project will result in over 1,700 cubic yards of material to be dredged out of the harbor just west of the street end at 21st Street. The material will be mechanically removed and placed on a barge, then in water-tight trucks to be taken to the disposal facility. A Notice to Proceed will be issued to the contractor in the next several days.
The Avalon Borough Council included funding in the 2019 temporary budget to finance the project.
