Avalon’s ten new pickleball courts at the 8th Street recreation complex

The Avalon Department of Recreation announced that ten brand new outdoor pickleball courts will be open at the 8th Street Tennis Complex in 2018.  Three of the tennis courts will be converted into ten outdoor pickleball courts to expand outdoor recreational opportunities in the Borough.  The new courts will be in operation in May, 2018.

“I want to thank Mayor and Council for its support for this innovative project in Avalon that we believe will be a huge success”, said Avalon Department of Recreation Director Chuck McDonnell.  “Avalon’s indoor pickleball program has a very large following and these ten new courts will not only serve avid pickleball players, but also help introduce this activity to new players as well”.

Avalon has six existing tennis courts at the 8th Street complex; half of those tennis courts will be converted into the new pickleball courts.  On most days the supply of available tennis courts exceeds demand which led to the pilot program of offering outdoor pickleball during the upcoming summer season.  The new courts will be open starting in May from 8:00am through 8:00pm, with a $3.00 walk up or drop in rate, and an open play pass that will be honored for the entire year.  The courts will be completely free to the public during the afternoon hours from 12:30-4:30pm.

Court assignments will be arranged through the recreation attendant on duty.  The rental of pickleball paddles will be made available to all players.

In addition to the three remaining hard tennis courts at the 8th Street Tennis Complex, 12 soft courts and three hard courts are also available for tennis players at the 39th Street Tennis Complex between Ocean Drive and Dune Drive.  Tennis courts are open from May 24th-September 9th, 2018.
