Bay-Atlantic Symphony arrives in Avalon Saturday, July 4th for a free concert

Avalon has a full weekend of special events for July 4th weekend including one of the largest fireworks displays on the East Coast, and the return of the Bay Atlantic Symphony patriotic concert inside Avalon Community Hall.  The Borough welcomes resident Martin “Joe” Reese, a World War II veteran and a member of American Legion Post #331, as the guest conductor of the orchestra for “Stars and Stripes Forever”.

On Thursday, June 30th, Avalon begins its “Thursdays at Surfside” summer concert series at Surfside Park, 30th Street and the beach, with a free performance at 7:00pm from “Jimmy and the Parrots”, one of the most well-known Jimmy Buffet-style party band in the United States.  On Friday, July 1st, Avalon begins its “Fridays at Surfside” free children’s performance series at 6:30pm.  “Minion Mayhem” is the theme of the event.

The weekend kicks into high gear on Saturday, July 2nd with a performance by the 63rd Army Band at Avalon’s Surfside Park, at 30th Street and the beach.  The band will play both patriotic and contemporary music during the concert, which begins at 6:30pm.  On Sunday, July 3rd, the Borough presents the annual boat parade along the back bays of Avalon, starting at 11:00am at the Avalon Yacht Club.  No registration is necessary to participate.

On Monday, July 4th, the Bay Atlantic Symphony returns for a patriotic concert inside Avalon Community Hall at 7:00pm, led by Conductor Jed Gaylin.  Mr. Reese will serve as a guest conductor during the performance.  He served in the United States Army in Frankfort, Germany in 1945.  Mr. Reese has been married to his wife Gloria for 73 years; the Reese family have been year-round residents in Avalon dating back to the mid-1930s.  Seating will be offered on a first come, first served basis.

After the symphony concert, Avalon will illuminate the sky at approximately 8:45pm with one of the largest fireworks displays on the East Coast.  The fireworks display will be set to music which will be simulcast on radio station WCZT 98.7FM the Coast.
